NEW & SILLY: dream

#36

ALIGN=LEFT, YO.

It's weird knowing that the majority of the nation is opposed to my marrying Rose -- and a certain extremist portion vehemently so. It's weird knowing that people are screaming at people like me, telling them they're going to hell, for doing something I would do. They're trying to scream at me. They're making it hard for me to remember what I ever got out of being a Christian.

Leno remarked that the Bush administration has created more gay marriages than jobs.

I don't think that the constitution should be amended to fit the opinions of a select group of people, and, despite my cynicism, I don't believe it has when it's been threatened the way it's being threatened now. Cecil Adams (I think) pointed out that the constitution was changed to protect eighteen year olds when people realized that they could fight and die for their country but not vote for who would run it. Women's and minorities' rights have been upheld -- with a battle, and now we're in for another battle that will seem unbelievable thirty years on. Gays fight and die for this country too. I don't believe the constitution should be used to impose Christianity on everyone. It was designed to protect individual freedom, not compartmentalize and assail it.

It seems like such a simple request to me. We aren't asking to do anything revolutionary. Since when was starting a family, seeking financial stability and legal recognition for medical emergencies, or wanting to publicly and officially commit to the person you love a threat to anyone? I read about one couple's experiences as an unmarried couple including lessened tax refunds and legal fees for the attorneys they had to consult in order to make sure that if one of them died, the other would be provided for. If the problem is that marriage is a sacrament, then the separation of church and state will allow churches that don't sanction gay marriages the freedom not to administer them. According to the U.S. Census 2000, half of all first marriages may end in divorce, so don't talk to me about the upholding the "sanctity" of marriage.

Some people are arguing that giving gay people the right to marry gives them a stronger foothold in a society that doesn't entirely want them (to put it lightly). They're afraid that gays will make their children gay which anyone who has felt any sort of attraction to another human being knows is untrue. As full of myself as I can be, I couldn't make any girl do anything she wasn't already predisposed to doing without me. And, I think, that if she wanted to be gay, it would be much better for everyone if she was just honest with herself about it, instead of constantly beating herself up over it. Why would anyone want to be gay when there's so much fear and hatred surrounding it?

Rory asked me why we chose such "gay" symbols to represent ourselves. "Why not a black hammer of death?" he suggested.

For an entertaining and enlightened (some more than others) view of both sides read Dan Savage's latest column .
